Testicles, including pelvis/inguinal, TBI
Late Effect (1st of 1)
Low functioning of testes (decreased production of the male hormone testosterone)
Infertility
Your risk is greater if:
- Your radiation dose was equal to or greater than 6 Gy. (This is associated with infertility.)
- Your radiation dose was equal to or greater than 20 Gy. (This is associated with the loss of ability to make the male hormone testosterone.)
- You were also treated with an alkylating agent (e.g., busulfan, cyclophosphamide)
Recommended Evaluation
- Complete physical exam and history yearly
- Special blood tests for male hormones (LH, FSH, testosterone) yearly
- Sperm count for evaluation of infertility
Management
- You may need to see a specialist (urologist or endocrinologist) for hormone replacement therapy.
- Your doctor may recommend a bone mineral density to see if you have osteopenia or osteoporosis.
- You may need a reproductive endocrinology consult for infertility.
