Late Effect (1st of 2)

Cirrhosis (chronic liver disease)

Your risk is greater if:

  • You had a high treatment dose, especially over 30-35 Gy to 1/3rd of the liver volume or 18 Gy to whole liver.
  • You have chronic hepatitis.
  • You drink alcohol.

Recommended Evaluation

  • Physical exam yearly
  • Special blood tests of liver function yearly

Management

  • You may need to see a liver specialist (gastroenterologist or hepatologist) if your tests are abnormal.

Late Effect (2nd of 2)

Liver cancer

Your risk is greater if:

  • You have chronic hepatitis.
  • You have cirrhosis.
  • You drink alcohol.

Recommended Evaluation

  • Special blood studies yearly
  • Liver ultrasound if you have a history of cirrhosis

Management

  • You will need an oncology consultation for medical management.
