Late Effect (1st of 1)

Non-functioning spleen that can lead to life-threatening infection

Your risk is greater if:

  • You had a high treatment dose, especially over 30 Gy.

Recommended Evaluation

  • Physical exam and blood culture whenever your temperature rises to 101º F (38.3º C) or higher

Management

  • See the doctor immediately for a temperature of 101º F (38.3º C) or higher.
  • Take prophylactic antibiotics at the beginning of an illness.
  • Have immunizations to prevent certain bacterial infections (Pneumococcal, meningococcal, H. influenza B)
  • Wear a MedicAlert® bracelet noting that your spleen doesn't work (asplenia).
