Late Effect (1st of 3)
Thyroid tumors, both cancerous and non-cancerous
Your risk is greater if:
- You were at a younger age during treatment
- You are female.
Recommended Evaluation
- Physical exam with careful examination of the thyroid gland yearly
Management
- You may need an ultrasound of the thyroid if your doctor can feel any lumps or growths.
- You will be referred to an endocrinologist or surgeon for a biopsy or possible surgery to remove your thyroid gland.
Late Effect (2nd of 3)
Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
Your risk is greater if:
- You are female.
- You received a higher radiation dose, especially over 20 Gy.
Recommended Evaluation
- History and physical exam yearly or more frequent during periods of physical growth
- Thyroid function studies (TSH, free T4) yearly
Management
- You may be referred to an endocrinologist for medical management (thyroid replacement).
Late Effect (3rd of 3)
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
Your risk is greater if:
- You had a higher radiation dose, especially over 35 Gy.
Recommended Evaluation
- History and physical exam yearly
- Thyroid function studies (TSH, free T4) yearly
Management
- You may need an endocrine consultation for medical management.
