Late Effect (1st of 1)

Possible affect on the intellect (e.g., lowered IQ [especially when combined with radiation], and learning disabilities such as decreased ability to process information, poor memory in some areas, short attention span, and difficulty with math, reading comprehension, and planning/organizational skills [especially in survivors of leukemia and lymphoma])

Your risk is greater if:

  • You were less than 6 years of age when treated.
  • You received high doses of the drug.
  • You also had methotrexate that was given directly into the spinal canal (intrathecal administration).
  • You also had radiation of more than 18 Gy to the head.

Recommended Evaluation

  • Regular assessment of educational or vocational progress, which may include neuropsychological (psychometric) testing

Management

  • You may require special assistance in school including possible placement in special education classes.
