Story Starter: Genetic Counseling & Hereditary Cancers

All cancers are genetic. People who carry certain genetic mutations are at higher risk for developing cancer. Genetic counseling is key to understanding who may be at increased risk, what testing is available, and what preventive options may exist. A family history of cancer may indicate a genetic predisposition to certain types of cancer, including breast, ovarian, colorectal, and prostate cancer. Our genetic counselors and physicians are available to discuss why some individuals with inherited mutations may be at increased risk for cancer and the services we offer that can help mitigate that risk.

Kenneth Offit, MD, Chief of the Clinical Genetics Service, is available to discuss his research on the genetic factors that can increase a person’s risk for cancer.
