Vincent A. Miller, MD
I am a board-certified medical oncologist specializing in treating patients with lung cancer. This is an exciting time for those of us in the field because we are finally seeing molecular medicine -- understandings of cancer biology -- converge with superb clinical care, and this, in turn, is leading to longer and better lives for our patients. I believe the event that validated the promise of personalized lung cancer medicine was the 2004 discovery of a mutation in a protein -- called the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) -- which was responsible for the profound decrease in tumor size that we see in some patients treated with pills targeting the receptor. Since that time, the pace of discovery in bringing new understandings to the biology of lung cancer has substantially accelerated, albeit at a pace still too slow for patients or their loved ones.
I lead our research initiatives for further improving outcomes for patients with EGFR mutations. At Memorial Sloan-Kettering, we have the unique capacity to perform routine testing for this and other mutations right here, which enables us to pick a targeted treatment for many patients now and even more in the coming months. We have regular interactive collaborative meetings with world-renowned research scientists, as well as the resources and motivation to rapidly turn these findings into new clinical trials that offer even more promise for improved outcomes.
