I am a psychiatrist who has worked for 30 years to help patients, their families, and medical staff cope with the psychological burden of cancer and its treatment. I have pioneered the study of the ways in which counseling, complementary therapies, and medication can reduce the distress experienced by cancer patients and their families. In 2000, I published a book for patients: The Human Side of Cancer (HarperCollins), and I am co-editor of a professional journal, Psycho-Oncology, and a textbook. I have also served on many national committees for the American Cancer Society and The National Cancer Institute, and the Institute of Medicine.
