As a board-certified psychiatrist, my expertise is in the psychological and psychiatric problems of patients with cancer and their families, as well as the ethical issues that arise in their care. I provide interventions to individual patients, couples, and families. In addition, I am the psychiatric liaison to the Melanoma Disease Management Team.
I am also affiliated with the psychotherapy laboratory. The lab conducts and examines trials to identify aspects of therapy that prove therapeutic to patients. My research interests have included studying the beneficial effects of psychotherapy and family-focused grief therapy for patients, and the interface of ethics and psychiatry in the care of cancer patients.
I helped to establish and am a member of the International Psycho-Oncology Society and the American Psychosocial Behavioral Oncology Society, both organizations of specialists in my field. In addition, I am a member of Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s ethics committee and a member of its related consultation subcommittee.
I have published and lectured on many topics of psycho-oncology, including ethical issues in the treatment of cancer patients; psychiatric treatment of cancer patients; and issues confronting family members and decision-makers.
