I am a surgeon who specializes in the treatment of head and neck cancer. I have a broad spectrum of interests that include cancers of the oral cavity and larynx, salivary tumors, thyroid malignancies, skin cancers, and sinonasal tumors. Many of my research interests parallel my clinical expertise. I am also the Director of MSKCC's Speech, Hearing, and Rehabilitation Center. Within this center, we have a particular interest in speech and swallowing function after cancer treatment. These functions ultimately have an important effect on a patient's quality of life. We are currently using functional MRI to understand the brain's role in swallowing function in an attempt to provide meaningful rehabilitation strategies for swallowing after head and neck cancer therapy.
I also have an expertise in treating patients with tumors of the sinonasal cavity and base of skull. MSKCC has brought together a team of physicians -- neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists -- who specialize in treating skull base tumors. This team approach allows for the removal of tumors at the base of the skull, which are often difficult to reach, while preserving such critical structures as the eye and brain. Immediate reconstruction also enhances a patient's appearance and improves function.
An additional area of clinical interest is the treatment of patients with melanoma in the head and neck area. We have developed a program that utilizes a procedure called lymphoscintigraphy to pinpoint the lymph node into which a nearby tumor is likely to travel first. This procedure, commonly used in patients with intermediate- and deep-thickness melanomas, helps to minimize the need for surgery and ultimately prevents deformity and loss of function. My other primary area of interest is in the management of patients with thyroid neoplasms.
In addition, I currently serve on the Executive Council of the North American Skull Base Society and the American Society for Head and Neck Cancer.
