Since joining the MSKCC faculty in 1990, my clinical work has been in the Breast Imaging Section of the Department of Radiology, where I interpret mammograms, breast ultrasound examinations, and breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, as well as perform breast interventional procedures. I serve as Chairman of the Radiology Research Committee as well as Director of Breast Imaging Research Programs.

My research has focused on image-guided breast needle biopsies, which provide a less invasive and less expensive alternative to surgery for diagnosing breast lesions. My work has been integral in setting the standards for breast needle biopsy technique and follow up, and has demonstrated the benefits of breast needle biopsy under stereotactic, ultrasound, and MRI guidance. This work has helped to expedite treatment in women with breast cancer and to avoid surgery in women with breast lesions that are benign.

I serve as Director of the Program for Women Faculty Affairs, established by Dr. Varmus in October 2005. Our mission is to ensure that professional development opportunities for faculty at MSKCC are equal for women and men. The Program for Women Faculty Affairs is a comprehensive effort in areas of recruitment, hiring, promotion, retention, and mentorship; it involves optimizing the work environment of women faculty and developing criteria to monitor success.
