As a medical oncologist specializing in the treatment of breast cancer, I have a strong desire to find ways of preventing the disease, rather than trying to control it once it has developed. As a result, the focus of my research has been on the identification of women at risk for breast cancer, especially hereditary risk due to the inheritance of mutations in specific genes, and on the optimal management of these women.
I have a medical practice that is weighted toward the management of young women with breast cancer, especially hereditary breast cancer, and I also maintain a separate practice where I coordinate screening for women who have a hereditary risk of the disease. My research has become focused not only upon developing the optimal intervention programs for women at risk, but also on evaluating the effect of those interventions on their quality of life.
