I direct the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, whose primary goal is to determine the presence and nature of microorganisms in material from patients. This information, when correlated with clinical impressions, helps in diagnosing infections and frequently helps guide therapy. My clinical and research interests include studies addressing the development of rapid and sensitive methods for diagnosing infections in the immunocompromised patient, determining appropriate antimicrobial therapies, and helping detect and track emerging pathogenic microorganisms.
