I am a chest surgeon who specializes primarily in the treatment of three groups of patients: those with with lung cancer, those with cancers that have spread to the lung from other sites, and those with tumors that arise from other structures in the chest, such as the thymus gland or the chest wall. My clinical work outside of the operating room is focused on designing and adminstering a program of heightened care for patients who are either recovering from major operations, or who present with significant debilities prior to surgery.
My research interests have been on the means of establishing the extent and prognosis of a patient with cancer, and on the best means of combining therapies (for example, surgery with chemotherapy). Currently, I am involved in research investigating whether adult cancers arise from adult stem cells, and if so, what the implications are for understanding the behavior and treatment of cancers.
