Chair, Department of Radiology; Carroll and Milton Petrie Chair
As Chair of the Department of Radiology, I both oversee and take part in clinical radiological practice and research. My primary interest is cross-sectional anatomic and molecular imaging of genitourinary cancers. I helped develop the use of MRI and CT for gynecological cancers and the application of MRI and MR spectroscopy to prostate cancer. Much of my research involves interdisciplinary collaboration and aims to discover minimally invasive methods for improving cancer detection, treatment planning, and follow-up.
I am a member of the Institute of Medicine. I also serve on the National Cancer Institute's Board of Scientific Advisors and on the Board of Directors of the Radiological Society of North America. I am currently the director of an NIH-funded research study on risk assessment for prostate cancer patients using MRI and MR spectroscopy. I have been the principal investigator or a co-investigator for 37 intramural foundation, industry, and government grants. I am the author or co-author of 20 books and more than 135 book chapters and have published over 400 original research reports, reviews, and editorials in peer-reviewed journals. I received the Marie Curie Award from the Society of Women in Radiology in 2002 and the gold medal from the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine in 2003. I am an honorary member of the German Radiological Society, the British Institute of Radiology, and the Croatian Academy of Science and Art, and an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Medicine. I hold an honorary doctorate from the Ludwig Maximilan University of Munich, Germany.
