Jack E. Burkhalter
I am a clinical health psychologist who specializes in cancer prevention, with a focus on smoking cessation. Through MSKCC's Smoking Cessation Program, I provide comprehensive treatment of tobacco dependence for cancer patients and those at high risk of the disease. My clinical research is focused on developing and testing innovative treatments for tobacco dependence in these populations.
I also specialize in the treatment of psychological distress in patients with lung cancer and conduct research that evaluates the quality of life of lung cancer survivors. I am a member of the Quality of Life Subcommittee of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB), a large cancer clinical trials group.
A particular clinical and research interest of mine is identifying and reducing cancer-related health disparities among the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender populations.
