Richard J. Wong, FACS
I am a surgeon who specializes in the removal of tumors located in the head and neck region. My expertise is in cancers involving the thyroid gland, oral cavity, salivary glands, neck, skin (melanoma), larynx, pharynx, sinuses, skull base, and parathyroid glands. My goal is to provide patients with optimal cancer treatment while maintaining high standards for their quality of life. I collaborate closely with my colleagues from endocrinology, radiation therapy, medical oncology, plastic surgery, the speech and swallowing center, and neurosurgery to provide a comprehensive team approach to treating thyroid and head and neck cancers.
I have a research interest in studying the application of genetically engineered viruses as a form of cancer therapy. Our group has published studies investigating the mechanisms through which herpes simplex and other viruses are able to infect and destroy cancer cells. This research has been funded by generous awards from the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Head and Neck Society, and the Flight Attendent Medical Research Institute. Our goal is to bring these novel therapies to clinical trials for patients with thyroid and head and neck cancers.
