I am a nuclear medicine physician with expertise in cardiac imaging to assess both patients who may be at high risk for heart problems during major surgery and the effects of cancer therapy on the heart. If imaging indicates a heart problem, the patient's physician may recommend its treatment before cancer surgery or a different cancer therapy that is less stressful to the heart. I also have expertise in the detection of inflammation, which helps to more precisely direct cancer therapy and which may be important in the diagnosis of certain tumors. I have additional expertise in radionuclide therapy for thyroid cancer. Furthermore, I am involved in the imaging of apoptosis (programmed cell death), which can be triggered by a variety of stimuli, including chemotherapy drugs.
I have been President of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Editor of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, and I am a Life Member of the American Board of Nuclear Medicine. I have received the De Hevesy Nuclear Pioneer Award of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and the William Beaumont Award of the American Medical Association, and I have presented the New Horizons lecture for the Radiological Society of North America.
