I am a board-certified surgical oncologist with expertise in treating cancer of the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreas. Tumors in these areas are relatively rare and many forms were once thought to be incurable, but I work with a team that has developed and uses many surgical and non-surgical techniques that have shown remarkable success in treating these cancers. Our multi-disciplinary methods of treatment -- including novel combinations of surgery, ablation, and chemotherapy -- offer patients a good chance of long-term survival and cure.

I have developed a number of clinical interests in my practice. I have extensive experience treating colorectal cancer and other cancers that have metastasized to the liver. Working with other members of the treatment team I employ a number of techniques including chemotherapy to shrink tumors so that surgery may be possible. In conjunction with our team of interventional radiologists, we also use ablation (use of heat to kill tumors) and portal vein embolization (to shrink the amount of liver to be resected or removed). When necessary, we perform two-stage liver surgeries to accomplish resections that cannot be safely performed in one operation. Also, we offer a type of liver surgery called parenchymal sparing liver resections to remove smaller amounts of liver tissue and increase the safety of such operations.

I have a strong clinical interest in combining surgery, systemic chemotherapy, and hepatic arterial infusional chemotherapy (chemotherapy delivered directly to the liver through an implanted device) to treat tumors that have spread extensively throughout the liver. I have developed minimally invasive (laparoscopic) approaches to liver surgery as well pancreatic resections.

I also care for many patients with primary liver cancer and have numerous treatment options for these patients including liver resection, hepatic artery embolization, and hepatic artery infusional chemotherapy.

In addition to my clinical work, I am very involved in research. I have published extensively on the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer and proven that cure is possible with liver resection. I have been very involved in research on treatments for gallbladder, pancreas, and bile duct cancer. I have developed clinical trials to determine the effectiveness of the combination of surgery and hepatic arterial infusional chemotherapy for unresectable liver metastases. Finally members of my research group are studying tissues from our surgical specimens to identify genetic changes in tumors. This will help us better understand treatment outcomes and enable us to develop new treatments.
