Karen E. Hurley
My clinical interests and research focus on the psychological issues related to an inherited predisposition to cancer. These may include: deciding whether to have genetic testing or prophylactic surgery; coping with anxiety and depression about facing a higher-than-average risk of cancer; dealing with illness and loss of family members; and other issues arising from a family history of cancer.
I currently have a grant from the US Department of Defense to study factors associated with an interest in undergoing prophylactic oophorectomy (removal of ovaries to reduce risk of cancer) and/or mastectomy (removal of breasts to reduce risk of cancer) in women who are undergoing genetic counseling and testing due to a family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer.
I am available for one-time consultations or for psychotherapy through the MSKCC Counseling Center. For an appointment, please call the Counseling Center at 646-888-0100.
