Abraham S. Bartell, MD
I am a child and adolescent psychiatrist and a pediatrician with experience working with sick children and their families. Most recently, my work has focused on children, adolescents, and young adults who have cancer or who have been affected by cancer. My emphasis is on individual and family-focused treatment interventions. In addition, I am the psychiatric liaison to the Department of Pediatrics.

My research interests focus on the impact of bone marrow transplants on mothers of the recipients and on communications skills training in pediatric oncology. I am currently affiliated with the psychotherapy laboratory, the communication skills research and training laboratory (COMSKIL), and the symptom studies and pharmacotherapy laboratory. The psychotherapy laboratory conducts and examines trials to identify aspects of therapy that prove therapeutic. COMSKIL develops research initiatives to further the field of communication, and provides communication skills training to clinicians in various areas (medical, surgical, and radiation oncology; pain and palliative care; critical care; radiology; and pediatrics) as well as to fellows and nursing staff. The symptom studies and pharmacotherapy laboratory conducts and examines symptom-assessment studies, which are aimed at enhancing quality of life and relieving suffering.

I also have an interest and experience in graduate medical education. I was a child and adolescent psychiatry residency training director for five years, as well as a founding member of the National Association of Pediatric Psychiatry and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training Program for residents and fellows.

Additionally I served on the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry committee on education and training for several years. I currently serve on the Department of Psychiatry’s training committee that oversees the psychosomatic medicine fellowship here at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
