Jerry L. Halpern
I am a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon with more than 30 years of experience in the full scope of my specialty, which involves the surgical management and treatment of the upper and lower jaws and their associated structures of the face.
I have been a senior attending at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital's Weill Cornell Medical Center since 1978, where I have been actively involved in teaching and training of our dual degree MD/DDS oral and maxillofacial surgeons. I have also worked at Memorial Sloan-Kettering for ten years, both teaching the fellows in our maxillofacial prosthetic and dental oncology programs and caring for the special oral surgical and dental needs of our cancer patients.
I treat benign lesions of the jaws, traumatic injuries, and odontogenic oral infections, and perform dentoalveolar and reconstructive jaw surgery. I am also board certified in dental general anesthesia. My area of expertise is in osseointegrated implant reconstruction, especially in patients with defects of the face and jaws related to cancer surgery, traumatic injuries, or congenital growth abnormalities.
I also work closely with our head and neck surgeons, plastic surgeons, and maxillofacial prosthodontists to place and plan both intraoral and extraoral osseointegrated implants following ablative cancer surgery, inclusive of eyes, ears, nose, and midface, for future prosthetic replacements. Additionally, I provide bone graft reconstruction, if needed, to rebuild the above defects to support the osseointegrated implants for planned protheses. My research interests currently involve investigating osteonecrosis of the jaws and its relationship to bisphosphonate therapy. A co-authored abstract was presented to the American Society of Clinical Oncology relating to osteonecrosis and bisphosphonate treatment in 2005.
In addition to my clinical and teaching activities, I am a forensic odontologist and a consultant for the office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the City of New York. I was actively involved in the identification process for the victims of the 9/11 World Trade Center disaster and the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 the same year. I have been honored by New York City, New York State, and the United States House of Representatives for my forensic work. In 2005, I was inducted into the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.I have also been inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Dentists.
I am also involved with organized dentistry on both the state and national levels. I am on the Board of Directors of the New York State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and an alternate delegate to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons House of Delegates. I am also a senior member of the Committee on Practice Management and Allied Staff for the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and have presented lectures at our annual scientific meetings on emergent anesthesia care and implant placement techniques.
On a local level I have represented the New York County Dental Society to the New York State Dental Society as their member to the Councils on Hospital Dentistry and Hospital Affairs and Dental Benefits.
I have lectured both nationally and internationally on implant reconstruction for patients with head and neck cancer, as well as the forensic response to the World Trade Center disaster. I have also produced a video for national distribution on conscious sedation in the oral and maxillofacial surgery practice.
