I am a neurologist with expertise in treating pain and other symptoms related to cancer and its treatment. I also specialize in palliative care for the management and treatment of symptoms that compromise patients' quality of life. Patients who are in need of acute pain management or supportive care are admitted to MSKCC's Palliative Care Unit. After diagnosing the causes of patients' pain, I direct their treatment -- which can include pain medication, radiation therapy, invasive interventions, and psychosocial support. I focus on pain symptom management and palliative care issues while patients are receiving treatment in the hospital and after they are discharged home. I also assist patients in locating healthcare resources available in their own communities. These include home care, nursing help, 24-hour supportive care programs, and outpatient or inpatient hospice services, as well as chaplainacy services, comprehensive psychiatric care, integrative medicine care, and counseling services for the patients and their families.

I supervise and teach clinical fellows in our Pain and Palliative Care Fellowship Program.

My research focus is pharmacological pain management and treatment of neuropathic pain and headache. I am currently participating in a clinical trial studying the use of d-methadone in patients with chronic cancer pain, and I am involved with other research projects in our Pain and Palliative Care Service. As well, I am collaborating in writing a book chapter, "Neurological Complications in Cancer."
