I am a surgeon and research fellow working with the Koff and Singer labs at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. My research focuses on the molecular biology governing initiation of desmoids tumors and the initiation and progression of liposarcoma. While the central pathways which are altered in adenocarcinoma are well-characterized, such aberrancies are not understood in mesenchymal-derived soft tissue sarcomas. Because there are few treatments available for patients with these diseases, it is essential that we characterize the molecular changes important in sarcoma transformation and metastasis. My particular focus is on the role that genes such as MDM2 play in modulating tumor suppressor pathways in sarcoma cells. We believe that such changes, in conjunction with altered E-cadherin/β-catenin expression, will form the basis for a model of sarcoma initiation and progression.
