Caroline earned both her MD (2002) and PhD (2006) from the University Of Utrecht, the Netherlands, and completed a residency in Pediatrics (2010) and a Fellowship in Immunology and Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (2012). She was trained in Medicine and Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant in the Netherlands and joined the Pediatric Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant team in Utrecht in 2010. This team transplants children ranging in age from 0-18 years old, with immunodeficiencies, malignancies, bone marrow failure syndromes and lysosomal storage diseases. Utrecht is one of the largest centers in Europe for using cord blood as the donor source. One of the major challenges particularly for transplanting non-malignant disease remains improving immune reconstitution and treating and preventing graft versus host disease (GVHD).
Caroline has been involved with designing, writing and coordinating clinical trials using Mesenchymal stromal cells for GVHD, and works on ameliorating epithelial damage during gut GVHD in the van den Brink Laboratory. Caroline received the Dutch Cancer Fund Fellowship Grant for research, which provided her the opportunity to join the van den Brink Laboratory at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
