The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics was founded in 1991 with support from Indiana University and the Lilly Endowment to encourage interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching of high quality in practical and professional ethics by educators and practitioners who appreciate the practical-theoretical aspects of their subjects. The Association facilitates communication and joint ventures among centers, schools, colleges, business and nonprofit organizations, and individuals concerned with the interdisciplinary study and teaching of practical and professional ethics.

The Association of American Universities (AAU) was founded in 1900 by a group of 14 universities offering the PhD degree. AAU currently consists of 60 American universities and two Canadian universities. The association serves its members in two major ways. It assists members in developing national policy positions on issues that relate to academic research and graduate and professional education. It also provides them with a forum for discussing a broad range of other institutional issues, such as undergraduate education.

The Council on Governmental Relations is an association of research universities. Since its inception in 1948, COGR has been continuously involved in the development of all major financial and administrative aspects of federally funded research. Today, COGR’s primary function is to provide advice and information to its membership and to make certain that federal agencies understand academic operations and the impact of proposed regulations on colleges and universities. COGR helps to develop policies and practices that fairly reflect the mutual interests and separate obligations of federal agencies and universities in research and graduate education.

The society has approximately 4,000 members worldwide who work in hospitals, universities, nonprofits, and the federal government.
