As a board-certified medical oncologist (chemotherapy doctor), my specialty is caring for patients with lung cancer. My expertise is in giving chemotherapy before or after surgery to patients who have lung cancers that can be removed by a surgeon. For patients being treated with radiation therapy, I also give chemotherapy prior to, during, or after radiation. I also have expertise in treating patients with lung cancer that has spread outside of the chest, also known as stage 4 lung cancer.
Whenever chemotherapy is given, our goal is to prolong life and preserve quality of life. Along with my colleagues in the lung cancer team, I conduct clinical trials of new drugs designed to improve length of life for patients with all stages of a subtype of lung cancer called non-small cell lung cancer. I study molecular tests of tumor tissue and blood that may assist doctors in choosing which patients to treat with chemotherapy and which drugs to give. I serve on national committees to develop guidelines which other oncologists use to learn the best way to treat their patients.
