Women with Lynch syndrome have a greater risk of developing endometrial and ovarian cancer, according to Noah Kauff, Director of Ovarian Cancer Screening and Prevention at Memorial Sloan Kettering. Dr. Kauff says that screening for gynecologic cancers in women with Lynch syndrome includes a combination of tests such as transvaginal ultrasound, blood tests to measure CA-125 (a protein associated with certain types of cancer), and endometrial biopsy. Oral contraceptives may reduce the risk of gynecologic cancers, but surgery to remove the uterus (hysterectomy) and ovaries (oophorectomy) after childbearing is the most effective way to prevent these cancers.
