Video: New OR Technologies Enhance Communication at Memorial Sloan Kettering

Nurse practitioner Mary Dowling, the director of acute care services at Memorial Sloan Kettering, describes how novel technologies have enhanced communication for clinicians and patients. Pathology, radiology, and laboratory data can be transmitted electronically between operating rooms and other parts of the hospital. All documentation is electronic, enabling clinicians to access information about patients wherever they are located. A robust wireless network makes it easy for patients with laptops and tablets to work or stay in touch with friends and family. The network also supports a hands-free, voice-activated device that each clinician wears around the neck, enabling instantaneous communication with other healthcare team members and eliminating the need for a noisy overhead paging system.
