Thoracic surgeon Inderpal Sarkaria discusses recent advances that have enabled thoracic surgeons to treat some esophageal cancer patients with minimally invasive robotic surgical platforms. Robotic surgery is most appropriate for patients with cancers in the distal or middle esophagus. Compared with conventional open approaches, robotic surgery results in less postoperative pain and a shorter hospital stay. Novel advances and applications such as the use of multiple consoles and fluorescence imaging are enhancing the technology.
