Thoracic surgeon David Finley reviews the recently extended (expanded) indications for robotic procedures in select lung cancer patients. The robotic platform provides improved visualization and enables surgeons to perform a range of complex procedures with dexterity, such as bronchoplasties, pneumonectomies, and anatomic sublobar resections. Postoperative pain, length of stay, and other outcomes following robotic surgery are comparable to those associated with video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), and are superior to open surgical approaches. Novel applications such as the use of multiple consoles and fluorescence imaging are enhancing the technology.
