Memorial Sloan Kettering medical oncologist Clifford Hudis begins his term as President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Clifford A. Hudis, a medical oncologist and Chief of the Breast Cancer Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering, began his term yesterday as President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the world’s leading professional organization for cancer researchers and physicians.
“It is a great honor to represent Memorial Sloan Kettering while serving as ASCO’s President during its 50th year,” says Dr. Hudis, who was inaugurated at the organization’s annual meeting in Chicago. “Our institution has a great tradition of contributing to ASCO and the global community of cancer researchers and caregivers, and I look forward to extending and expanding this productive collaboration.”
A renowned figure in translational research and clinical care, Dr. Hudis will serve as ASCO President until June 2014. As President, he will work collaboratively with ASCO leadership to further the society’s goals of improving all aspects of clinical care, including access, effectiveness, and affordability.
In the clinic, Dr. Hudis is devoted to the treatment of patients with breast cancer. He focuses his research on prevention of the disease, prevention of recurrence after surgery, and treatment of recurrences. Specifically, he is involved in clinical and translational studies that aim to develop better hormone therapies, improved chemotherapy drugs, more-effective and less-toxic methods of drug delivery, and newer, highly specific agents.
Dr. Hudis obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania, where he also completed his internship and residency. He was a fellow in medical oncology and hematology at Memorial Sloan Kettering before joining the staff. Since joining ASCO in 1991, he has demonstrated his dedication to the organization through his active leadership and serving for periods as Treasurer of the ASCO Board of Directors and as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Oncology, ASCO’s flagship publication.
