Murray F. Brennan, a distinguished cancer surgeon and former Chair of Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Department of Surgery, has been named Vice President for International Programs and Director of the Elmer and Mamdouha El-Sayed Bobst International Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering.

Murray F. Brennan, a distinguished cancer surgeon and former Chair of Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Department of Surgery, has been named Vice President for International Programs and Director of the Elmer and Mamdouha El-Sayed Bobst International Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering.

Dr. Brennan — who will continue to treat patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering — is a widely respected educator and mentor, as well as a clinician and researcher. During his 20-year leadership of the Department of Surgery (1985-2006), he developed one of the preeminent surgical training programs in the world, educating more than 150 surgical oncology fellows who now practice in hospitals around the world. As a surgeon, Dr. Brennan has special expertise in the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas, endocrine tumors, and cancers of the pancreas and stomach. Over the course of his career he has designed and conducted numerous clinical trials, which have produced major findings in the management of patients with soft tissue sarcomas and pancreatic cancer.

Among his many honors, Dr. Brennan is the incumbent of the Benno C. Schmidt Chair in Clinical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering and is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

Dr. Brennan succeeds Thomas J. Fahey, the founding director of the International Center, who remains on the attending staff of the Department of Medicine and will serve as an advisor to the International Center.

I will always be thankful for Dr Brennan - he gave my father a 2nd chance at life. Save him from the dreadful pancreatic cancer. He is not only a fantastic Doctor - he had the best bedside manners. At a time my family was so stress he made us feel like we were his only patient. He had a asst. that work with him and she was terrific to. Always tried to comfort us and help us with question.
