Gynecological surgeon Richard Barakat will lead the network by expanding its presence in the New York metropolitan area while also building relationships and forming alliances with medical institutions outside the region.
Gynecologic surgeon Richard R. Barakat has been appointed Deputy Physician-in-Chief for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Regional Care Network and Alliances. In this position, Dr. Barakat will lead the network into the future by expanding its presence throughout the New York metropolitan area while also building relationships and forming alliances with medical institutions outside the region. He will ensure that the highest standards of patient care continue to be delivered at all Memorial Sloan Kettering sites, and will lead the effort to fully implement and expand the recently announced Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance.
Dr. Barakat joined Memorial Sloan Kettering in 1989 as a fellow in gynecologic oncology. He has served as Chief of the Gynecology Service for the past 12 years. During this time, he recruited many outstanding colleagues and expanded the service from six to 14 attending physicians and from four to 12 clinical fellows. Under his leadership, surgical volume more than doubled, from approximately 900 cases annually to more than 1,800. And in addition to maintaining his own active surgical practice, Dr. Barakat instituted a major laparoscopic and robotic surgery program within the Gynecology Service that now accounts for the majority of the gynecologic surgeries performed at Memorial Sloan Kettering.
