Each year during National Nurses Week, MSK honors our invaluable nurses with the Rudin Awards for outstanding service in nursing and patient care support. The award winners are nominated by fellow nurses, administrators, physicians, and patients. A ceremony held on May 6 honoring the six 2015 Rudin awardees included remarks from MSK President and CEO Craig Thompson and MSK Physician-in-Chief José Baselga.

  • The Rudin Awards are given every year during National Nurses Week.
  • The awards honor excellence in various nursing categories at MSK.
  • Our nurses are a vital part of our patients’ treatment teams.
  • The Rudin Family Foundation sponsors the awards.

Memorial Sloan Kettering nurses play an indispensable role in ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care. Each year we honor a select group of them during National Nurses Week with the Samuel and May Rudin Awards.

Five Memorial Sloan Kettering nurses and one patient care technician were recognized for exemplary service at this year’s Rudin Awards ceremony, held on May 6. The awards are sponsored by the Rudin Family Foundation and honor excellence in nursing practice, leadership, education, and patient care. Winners are nominated by fellow nurses, administrators, physicians, and patients.

In remarks at the ceremony, MSK President and CEO Craig B. Thompson emphasized that the high level of care demonstrated by the awardees is pervasive throughout what he called “the strongest nursing department in the country.”

“While the Rudin Awards recognize individuals for their extraordinary achievement and service, this event is really a celebration of each and every one of you and what you do for our patients and their families,” he said. “You set a standard for others to follow.”

Dr. Thompson pointed out that much cancer care at MSK and elsewhere is moving to an outpatient setting. MSK is addressing this need by opening a major outpatient treatment center for surgery and another for ambulatory care near the institution’s campus in Manhattan.

“We’re going to have to shift our care mission to a blended inpatient and outpatient experience,” he said, “and I’m really counting on everyone in the nursing department to lead that transition.”

MSK Physician-in-Chief José Baselga praised the nurses for their emotional strength while working long, difficult hours and their “tremendous knowledge” in staying up to date on the latest standards of care.

“This is one of the most challenging professions there is, but also the most rewarding,” he said. “You represent the best we have to offer as human beings — compassion, integrity, stewardship, leadership, and excellence.”

Please add Chris Liebertz. Outstanding nurse, caring, respectful, gracious, and always here for us. She is a beautiful person both inside and out. And she donates to MSKCC by running marathons! She is the kind of woman that I want my daughters to emulate. So, if it is not too late, please give her a Rudin Award, too. With great admiration, The Slesnick's
