Sergio A. Giralt has joined Memorial Sloan Kettering as Chief of the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Service within the Division of Hematologic Oncology in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Giralt is a hematologic oncologist whose focus is stem cell transplantation for patients with blood cancers. He has worked to improve treatments for older patients and, with his colleagues, pioneered the use of reduced-intensity conditioning regimens, which have made transplants for older patients safer and more effective. Dr. Giralt is the Chair of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network, funded by the NIH, which develops the national stem cell transplant research agenda.

Dr. Giralt comes to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center following a 20-year career at MD Anderson Cancer Center. After completing his fellowship training there, he joined the faculty of their Department of Hematology and in 2004 was named Deputy Chair of the Department of Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapies. He earned his medical degree at Universidad Central de Venezuela, in Caracas, and was a resident at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati before joining MD Anderson.
