Valerie W. Rusch has been named to the Miner Family Chair in Intrathoracic Cancers.

Dr. Rusch, Chief of the Thoracic Service, is an internationally recognized surgeon whose specialty is treating patients with cancers of the lung, esophagus, mediastinum, chest wall, and pleura. Her research efforts center on the genetics of lung cancer and mesothelioma in an effort to predict how a patient will fare with treatment, and on the development of methods to detect thoracic cancers at an early stage. She has also been a leader in national clinical trials for the treatment of thoracic malignancies. Dr. Rusch received her MD degree in 1975 from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Prior to joining the Memorial Sloan Kettering faculty in 1989, she served on the faculties of The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the University of Washington, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Rusch previously held the William G. Cahan Chair in Surgery.

The Miner Family Chair was established in 2005 to support the work of a physician or scientist who will advance the understanding of and help develop therapies for mesothelioma and other intrathoracic cancers. It was endowed by Florence and Gloria Miner in honor of their brother, the late Robert Miner. Florence and Gloria Miner also established the Batishwa Fellowship, named in honor of their mother, to support the work of a postdoctoral fellow conducting mesothelioma research at Memorial Sloan Kettering.
