Clinical Utility of Whole Breast Screening Ultrasound in Patients Undergoing Digital Breast Tomosynthesis


Whole breast ultrasound is often used as part of breast cancer screening in women with dense breasts because it has been shown to detect more cancers than regular mammography in these patients. Digital breast tomosynthesis is a form of three-dimensional mammography that has also been shown to detect more cancers in women than regular mammography. However, 3D mammography and whole breast ultrasound have not been compared.

The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of whole breast ultrasound and 3D mammography for detecting breast tumors in women already scheduled to have both ultrasound and regular mammography.


To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Participants must be women age 30 and older who are scheduled to have both ultrasound and digital mammography on the same day or within 30 days of each other.
  • Participants may not have any breast symptoms (such as a palpable mass or nipple discharge), any known cancer, or a history of breast surgery or biopsy within 90 days of entering the study.
  • Women who are pregnant or lactating and those with breast implants may not participate.
