A Study Evaluating Body Fat Percentage and Tissue Inflammation Levels in Patients Undergoing Surgery for Breast Cancer

Body Composition and White Adipose Tissue Inflammation

Purpose

Some studies have suggested that inflammation in fatty tissue may increase the risk of several cancers, such as breast cancer. In this study, researchers are exploring whether patients with a higher body fat percentage are more likely to have inflammation in the fatty tissue removed during mastectomy.

Patients will have a DEXA scan (the same type of scan used to measure bone density) to assess their percentage of body fat. DEXA scans are safe, commonly used, and highly accurate for measuring body composition. Inflammation levels in leftover tissue from the mastectomy will be examined, and the results will be correlated with patients’ body fat percentage. In addition, researchers will compare tissue inflammation levels with patients’ physical activity (as reported through questionnaires) and levels of metabolic and inflammatory molecules in the blood.

Eligibility

This study will include patients age 18 or older who will be having a mastectomy at Memorial Sloan Kettering. Patients may not have received chemotherapy or radiation therapy before surgery.
