Medical oncologist Sandra D’Angelo, who specializes in caring for patients with rare cancers such as melanoma, soft tissue sarcoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma, talks about the team approach and the importance of empowering patients.

I am a medical oncologist specializing in the care of patients with soft tissue and bone sarcomas, and melanoma. I work very closely with our multidisciplinary team of medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, nurses, and patient support advocates to provide the best care and treatment for patients with these diseases. Our highly specialized team recognizes and appreciates the unique challenges that confront our patients, and we are all committed to addressing their needs.

My research is focused on the development of new targeted drugs and small molecules to combat melanoma and sarcoma, with the hope of attacking cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy cells. We aim to identify molecular features within tumors that allow us to predict sensitivity or resistance to drug therapies and, in turn provide the most individualized care possible for our patients. By characterizing tumors based on their genetic changes, we can employ specific therapies to target these changes, and design and conduct clinical trials to improve treatment approaches for patients with this uncommon cancer type. As an attending physician at Memorial Sloan Kettering studying new treatments for sarcoma and melanoma, I am at the forefront of this research and look forward to contributing to the field in meaningful ways while improving the lives of our patients.
