I am a plastic surgeon who specializes in reconstruction after cancer surgery. I have a strong interest in breast reconstruction and perform a wide range of techniques, including DIEP flaps and ‘direct to implant’ surgery. For an overview of breast reconstruction options and the factors involved in determining the ideal surgical approach, please watch my live webinar Making Informed Decisions about Breast Reconstruction. I am also involved in a number of advocacy, outreach, and education initiatives for breast cancer survivors.
My main research interest lies in assessing health-related quality of life among oncology patients. With grant support from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, I have developed a questionnaire, the BREAST-Q, which measures satisfaction and quality-of-life outcomes among breast reconstruction patients. This questionnaire examines body image and psychological, social, sexual, and physical function, as well as satisfaction with the process of care.
The BREAST-Q has been translated into 14 languages and widely adopted by other cancer centers as well as the National Health Service in Great Britain, which is using it in a national audit of mastectomy and reconstruction outcomes. (You can learn more about the BREAST-Q here.)
I am involved in a number of research studies that seek to better understand the patient perspective on surgical outcomes and experiences. I am Director of MSK’s Patient-Reported Outcomes and Surgical Experience (PROSE) program and Principal Investigator of a study funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) that examines how electronic patient-reporting of symptoms may improve care. I am also co-Principal Investigator of the National Breast Implant Registry (in collaboration with FDA), co-Principal Investigator of the Mastectomy Reconstruction Outcomes Consortium (R01-CA-152192-01-A1) and President-Elect of the Plastic Surgery Foundation. I am past Vice-President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and a past board member of the International Society of Quality of Life.

Most major health insurers offer plans that include MSK as one of their in-network providers. If MSK is in-network, it means all our doctors are too. Medicaid and New York State Medicare also provide benefits for care at MSK.Learn more
