My surgical practice and clinical research for the past 40 years have focused entirely on the treatment of breast cancer, a disease for which surgery remains very effective and continues to become more moderate. My interests have included patterns of spread in the breast and lymph nodes, long-term outcomes of breast cancer surgery, the impact of screening mammography, and sentinel lymph node biopsy.
As Principal Investigator for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s sentinel lymph node biopsy program, I and my colleagues have taught the technique to hundreds of surgeons, presented and published our work worldwide, and continue to study and refine the procedure, allowing many breast cancer patients to avoid the side effects of more extensive lymph node surgery.
My most recent interest has been the management of cancer recurrence in the breast following lumpectomy. Although historically treated by mastectomy, we have observed excellent outcomes from a second lumpectomy for a growing number of our patients.
I have served as Acting Chief of the Breast Service (2006–08) and am active in local, national, and international organizations. I am a Past-President of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and of the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group. I lecture widely, am active in peer review, have edited the multiauthor textbook Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy, and have authorship of more than 240 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and reviews. I perform about 350 breast cancer operations each year.
I have been married to retired New York Philharmonic violinist Myung-Hi Kim for almost 40 years. We live on the Upper West Side, and in my spare time I enjoy our three adult daughters, four grandchildren, classical music, travel, sports, gardening, and classic toy trains.
