I am an interventional radiologist who specializes in interventional oncology. This is a minimally invasive approach to treating cancer. I use images — such as X-rays, CTs, and MRIs — to see tumors in the body along with the blood vessels that supply them. With that information, I am able to block the cancer’s blood supply or use the blood vessels to deliver chemotherapy or radiation directly to the tumors. I am also able to guide needles to a tumor, then take a sample or destroy it with either extreme heat or extreme cold. This is called ablation. People who have image-guided procedures do not need incisions (cuts), and they often don’t need general anesthesia. For many people, these procedures are less risky and their recovery times are shorter than for traditional surgery. Image-guided procedures ensure precision and avoid complications.

As a faculty member of the colorectal, thyroid, and lung teams, I work very closely with my colleagues from hepatobiliary, colon, and thoracic surgery and gastrointestinal, lung, and endocrine oncology as well as radiation therapy. Together, we determine the most appropriate treatment for people with cancer of the colon, thyroid, lung and liver.

Some of my current research involves laser ablation of soft tissues. This includes the thyroid gland and lymph nodes. I am also evaluating nonthermal ablation tools, such as irreversible electroporation (NanoKnife). I am studying using PET images to guide ablation treatments or to monitor the health of people who have had image-guided therapies. In addition, I am involved in finding ways to boost the immune system’s reaction to cancer and minimally invasive therapies. I lecture nationally on topics as embolization, radio embolization, and ablation of tumors, particularly colorectal, thyroid, and lung tumors that have spread from other parts of the body as well as hepatocellular cancer.

I believe that as a patient, you always have options and you make the final decisions in guiding your care. Ultimately, my goal is to provide excellent patient-centered care by understanding each individual’s needs. I love working with my medical, surgical, and radiation oncology colleagues to provide a first-class experience.

Ultimately, my goal is to provide excellent patient-centered care through the assessment of each individual's needs.
