I joined the faculty at Memorial Sloan Kettering as a hematologist in 1991, and just over a decade later took on the responsibility of Chief of the Hematology Laboratory Service. In this role, as well as in my capacity as Director of the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center and Associate Director of the Rockefeller Outpatient Pavilion, I am in charge of the laboratory tests done on our patients with blood-related (hematologic) diseases.
Over the years I have been involved in more than 20 clinical research trials to further refine and hone our approach to treating hematologic diseases such as leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Based on these data, I have, in collaboration with my colleagues, published more than 170 journal articles, book chapters, and abstracts.
Among our current research projects is an attempt to find new therapies for acute and chronic leukemia that harness the power of the immune system. We are also making advances in finding new ways to measure certain characteristics of cells in blood-related cancers and other malignancies through a measurement test called flow cytometric assays. I hope also to develop cell markers in the laboratory that can help us advance our clinical research.
Over the years it has also been very edifying, and gratifying, to be active on a national and international level in many of my specialty’s organizations, such as the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Hematology. In 2010 I was invited to be an Oversees Fellow for the Royal Society of Medicine (UK).

Research is integral to our mission at Memorial Sloan Kettering, and clinical trials help us discover better forms of patient care and treatment. For you, this could mean access to a new therapy or therapy combination. Click to see a list of the trials I’m currently leading.
