About Me

I am an internist and gastroenterologist who has been in practice at Memorial Sloan Kettering for more than 40 years. My clinical focus is on gastrointestinal oncology and gastrointestinal endoscopy.

I led the development of MSK’s pancreatic tumor registry, which has grown to be one of the largest familial pancreatic tumor registries in the US. We developed this registry for people who are at in increased risk for the disease because of their family history. Using MRI, we screen healthy people to look for lesions that could develop into cancerous tumors. If we detect lesions, we can follow up with more extensive testing. Pancreatic cancer is difficult to treat, and the disease is almost always fatal without intervention. With our familial pancreatic tumor registry, we hope to identify people with precancerous lesions – or people who have an earlier stage of pancreatic cancer – so that they can get the care they need sooner and improve their chances for good outcomes.

My research goes hand-in-hand with my work on MSK’s pancreatic tumor registry: I am studying pancreatic cancer early detection and screening for people with a high risk of the disease because of their family history. I am also working to identify risk factors that lead to the development of pancreatic cancer, and to understand the genetics behind familial pancreatic cancer.

In addition to my clinical work and research interests, I am an active leader in hospital affairs. I served as Chief of the Gastrointestinal and Nutrition Service, and am a former president of MSK’s medical staff and past-chairman of the Clinical Council. Outside of MSK, I am a past chairman of the American Gastroenterological Association’s Section on Gastrointestinal Oncology.

Insurance

Most major health insurers offer plans that include MSK as one of their in-network providers. If MSK is in-network, it means all our doctors are too. Medicaid and New York State Medicare also provide benefits for care at MSK.
