Group Class Schedule & Descriptions

Through Integrative Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering offers more group fitness and yoga classes than any other independent cancer center, regionally or nationally. Physical activity is one of the best methods to prevent and treat physical side effects, such as fatigue, muscle weakness and bone density loss, and achieve long term wellness goals.

Beyond the physical benefits, our group classes and personal training sessions are opportunities to regain emotional strength. From week to week, patients and survivors build camaraderie while they are exercising and having fun. Classes and services are open to all; patients, survivors, caregivers and the community.

Exercise for All

Our signature aerobics class will help patients of all ages and abilities increase their endurance for everyday activities. Utilizing a variety a small weights, fitness instructor Donna Wilson RN, CNS CPT incorporates movements that strengthen the upper body, including the back and arm muscles, and legs. This small class helps decrease breathlessness and fatigue, improve muscle tone and flexibility.

Community Acupuncture

Community acupuncture is a low-cost and safe non-drug option for helping to relieve and reduce:

  • nausea from chemotherapy
  • hot flashes
  • osteoarthritis pain
  • dry mouth
  • fatigue
  • lymphedema
  • neuropathy

You will be among a maximum of six people treated by one of Integrative Medicine’s senior acupuncturists. The treatment, which will be performed with your clothes on, lasts 40 to 45 minutes.

Empowering Yoga

Empowering Yoga works to improve strength and flexibility. The mix of yoga positions and transitions opens the heart, challenges the core, strengthens the legs, and revitalizes the body for active living.

Focused Fitness for Women

Focused Fitness for Women is geared for our female patient populations, particularly breast and GYN cancer survivors. Common side effects these patients experience after surgery can include lymphedema or “frozen shoulder”. This class can help reduce the risk of lymphedema and improve range of motion if the condition has already been diagnosed. Exercises in this class will target areas of the body, including abs, legs, seat, lower back and thighs, without jumping and running that can put strain on the joints.

Just Breathe

Just Breathe focuses on taking deep breaths, the quickest way to decrease stress and to engage the mind and body in a relaxation response. Classes are held on the first Thursday of the month only.

Martial Arts & Meditation

This class combines traditional martial arts exercises with yogic breathing, guided imagery and meditation. This is a low-impact but an effective workout for the body and the mind. The concentration involved allows you to block out stress for the hour; this class can be the 60 minutes of “me” time we all look for.

Mindfulness Practice Group

This weekly group focuses on the practices of mindfulness meditation, the foundation of all meditation traditions. While mindfulness meditation is simple to learn, its benefits are profound and long lasting. A brief conversation with the group leader is required prior to participating, and can be arranged with the front desk. Space is limited; pre-registration is encouraged.

Integrative Medicine’s new PEX class pays attention to the unique needs our men patients and survivors share: to rebuild their muscle strength, improve balance and increase endurance. Through cardio sequences and weight training, PEX offers men of all ages and stage of treatment a fun and challenging workout that improve their health, physically and mentally.

Strong Bones & Muscular Health

Strong Bones & Muscular Health is an exercise program for those who have osteoporosis or are at risk of developing it. Exercise helps to maintain bone density and stimulate bone growth. This class uses walking, aerobics, and balance and weight training to strengthen bones.

Tai Chi/Qi Gong

Qi Gong combines movement and meditation, and can be practiced by individuals of any age or fitness level. Regular practice of Qi Gong can reduce stress, increase stamina and balance, improve sleep, and instill a sense of harmony.

T-Tapp: The Wellness Workout

Improve your posture and lose inches with this rehabilitative approach to fitness. T-Tapp tightens, tones, strengthens, stretches, and energizes your body as it works five to seven muscles simultaneously. It also improves body alignment through strength training, isometrics, balance training, and flexibility exercises.

Yoga for EveryBODY

Try yoga in a supportive and soothing environment customized to you. In these classes, you will learn a variety of classic yoga breathing methods and postures, and can work on improving your flexibility, lifting your mood, and learning how to better control your breathing. Yoga teacher Catherine Genzler will tailor exercises and poses to your needs. Some people prefer to stay seated when doing yoga poses, for example.
