Oncologists Ghassan Abou-Alfa (left) and Eileen O'Reilly work with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best possible care for patients with primary liver cancer.
Treatment advances have boosted survival rates for people with primary liver cancer, and today many people survive the disease.
Over the past decade, Memorial Sloan Kettering doctors have cared for more than 5,000 individuals with this illness. We take a multidisciplinary team approach, and our experts meet weekly to review cases, bringing a range of clinical perspectives and experiences to the development of a treatment for each person.
Our surgeons perform hundreds of procedures annually to remove liver tumors, and routinely offer treatment to people whose tumors are considered inoperable at other hospitals. If surgery is not an option, our interventional radiologists can in many cases provide minimally invasive therapies that use imaging techniques such as CT, ultrasound, or MRI to guide treatments directly to the tumor site.
We are one of the few facilities in the nation with experience in treating fibrolamellar-hepatocellular carcinoma, a very rare form of liver cancer that affects young men and women and for which there are limited treatment options other than surgery.
Our physicians and surgeons have great experience and expertise in managing cholangiocarcinoma, an uncommon cancer that arises from the bile duct cells inside or outside of the liver.
At Memorial Sloan Kettering our goal is to cure or alleviate your disease while enabling you to have the best possible quality of life. We offer a range of support programs designed to help you and your friends and family members cope with the emotional and logistical concerns related to life during and after treatment for liver cancer.
In addition, we work to ensure that you have access to innovative techniques, new drugs, and clinical trials if appropriate.
