Laboratory Medicine Building

In recent years, Memorial Sloan Kettering has expanded treatment services in order to serve more patients in Manhattan, Brooklyn, as well as Long Island, Westchester, and New Jersey. As patient volume has grown, so has our patients’ need for laboratory services — more than doubling in the past decade. As our clinical programs expand, this demand will only continue to increase.

To meet this demand, Memorial Sloan Kettering has built a state-of-the-art laboratory medicine facility on East 64th Street between First and Second Avenues. The new Center for Laboratory Medicine will maximize operational efficiency and allow for the development of new tests, permitting the Laboratory Medicine team to provide test results faster, more accurately, and generating more useful information for the treatment teams treating MSK patients.

Laboratory services performed at the facility will include specialized testing in hematology/hemostasis, clinical chemistry, microbiology/ infectious disease, and flow cytometry (a technique used to examine the proteins present on the surface of cells to most accurately classify their subtype). A full-service blood bank and stem cell therapy laboratory will be used to prepare blood and cell products for transfusion at the point of care. In addition, the new facility will support a number of training programs for the next generation of laboratory medicine professionals.

As with all new Memorial Sloan Kettering construction, the design and materials will be chosen with sustainability in mind. External design features include rear-yard setbacks on floors 2 and 5, and rear- and front-yard setbacks on the sixth floor. The building will be aiming to obtain a LEED Gold Status one it has been fully completed and occupied.
