Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center offers a highly competitive stipend and benefits package for all postdoctoral researchers. This section contains information to help you understand our policies for compensation and benefits.
The compensation and benefits you receive as a postdoctoral fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering depend on the type of appointment you have. There are three types of appointments:
Research Fellows are researchers who have received a doctoral degree (or equivalent) and are engaged in a temporary and defined period of mentored advanced training to enhance the professional skills and research independence needed to pursue their scientific careers.
People in this category are supported by extramural fellowships, institutional training grants, or institutional and/or philanthropic funds that provide stipends for postdoctoral training.
Research Scholars are similar to research fellows, but receive funding from different sources. You will receive the title Research Scholar if the extramural agency that’s funding your research requires you to be an employee of the institution.
Research Scholars are classified as employees by the Memorial Sloan Kettering payroll department and receive a salary. The salary may be supplemented by institutional or philanthropic support.
You may be appointed with the title Research Associate if you have already completed some postdoctoral training. Researchers in this category may be one of the following:
- Postdoctoral researchers who have had at least three years of postdoctoral training at Memorial Sloan Kettering and have made a significant contribution to the research of the laboratory
- Postdoctoral researchers who have had at least three years of relevant postdoctoral research experience at another institution
- Postdoctoral researchers who have exceeded five years of postdoctoral training at Memorial Sloan Kettering
Research Associates may be funded by extramural agencies that require them to be an employee of the institution or by institutional or philanthropic funds, in full or in part. They are classified as employees by payroll and receive a salary.
