Acupuncture for Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

After receiving lifesaving neurotoxic chemotherapy, many people develop a painful condition called chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, or CIPN. Research conducted at MSK has demonstrated acupuncture can help reduce pain and other symptoms that commonly occur with CIPN. In this workshop, you will hear from Dr. Ting Bao, Director of Integrative Breast Oncology at MSK and lead investigator on these studies. She will discuss the research and rationale behind acupuncture for CIPN. You will also learn ways to relieve CIPN symptoms at home using acupressure and self-massage from two MSK acupuncturists.

Audience

This workshop is open to people who have been treated for cancer and their caregivers. It is designed for people who have been diagnosed with CIPN and people receiving chemotherapy that may cause CIPN.

This class is taught online through Zoom, a videoconference system.

You Will Need:

  • A comfortable seat that allows you to reach your arms and legs easily
  • A computer with a high-speed Internet connection, or a tablet, such as an iPad, or a smartphone
  • A webcam, speaker, and microphone. If you do not have a microphone and speaker, you can participate in the class by phone. You will receive the phone number once you register.
  • Google Chrome or Firefox as your browser

What To Wear:

  • Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that will allow you to easily massage your extremities 

You Must Be Able To:

  • Reach your lower legs to massage some of the acupressure points 
  • Apply gentle pressure with your hands 
  • Modifications: follow along comfortably and if there is a point you cannot reach, continue with just the breath component
